Beach holidays: Costa Nova

April 5, 2010 in Beaches in Portugal, Places in Portugal

A lovely beach south of Aveiro, for nearly a century people have come here to spend beach holidays.

Costa Nova, on the south of Aveiro’s ria and Torreira to the north. Costa Nova is an old, well known beach that used to be a fisher village until it was slowly discovered for baths. By 1846 it was one of the most famous beaches. From those days the Palheiros (Storehouses firstly for the fishermen’s fishing things, then adapted to accommodate the bathers from the city) are still standing in their colourfulness. The beach is on a stretch of land between the sea and the  ria, so on the one side you can bathe in the sea on the other you can you go for a boat ride on the ria. Also very interesting are the boats used in the ria to collect the seaweed that are used to fertilize the lands.  It is on the one hand the traditional beach resort, on the other an old lively village.
