A simple, no frills restaurant for Portuguese food. The restaurant is somewhat loud at noon: but that’s us being sociable! At noon there a menu with soup, dish, drink and coffee. The ser vice is nice and friendly. - Grão de Bico, Travessa do Carmo 5, 4050 Porto; tel.:+351 222 011 064. Average price 9€
Same here but a bit better looking, and specially if you aren’t a vegetarian and want to eat a delicious steak from Alvarenga (a very small village close to Arouca which produces very tasty meat). - Companhia dos Peixes, Rua do Ouro 133-135, Porto; tel.: + 351 226 185 655. The dining room on the first floor offers a nice view over the river and together with the name we know why we are here: to eat the fresh fish just fished hours away. The starter include petinga” (small fried crisp sardines), Octopus salad among others. The fish is always prepared in three ways: boiled, grilled or roasted and is always served with jacket potatoes and vegetables. Die Deserts are delicious try the ” misto de fruta” a kind of fruit mix” or the cocoa cake. - O Carteiro, Rua do Senhor da Boa Morte, 4150 Porto; tel.: +351 225 321 170. Mo.-Sa., 12.30-14.30 and 20.00-23.00 Uhr. Average price 12€
Very agreeable and nice restaurant, quite simple the decoration but cosy. Food here is very good, but it takes a lot of time, so come ready to wait, as everything is prepared on the dot. The starters are very good and the main course revives old portuguese recipes like the “folhado”, which is a sort of a pie with “migas” a bread mush and boiled chestnuts (hmmm!). For lunch they have a menu with soup, mein course, drink and bread for 7€. - Morfeu Marginal, Rua do Ouro, 400 , Porto; tel.: + 351 226 095 295; Closed Sunday evenings and Monday at lunch. Average price 25€.
It used to be in Condominhas street, also known simply by the owner’s name: Maria Jorge. Now it grew, modernised itself and came down closer to the river. The good cooking is still the same performed by Chef Natário Monteiro Paulo and still served with charm by Mrs Maria Jorge. - Laje do Senhor do Padrão, Rua Heróis de França, 516, Matosinhos, tel.: + 351 229 384 807. Average price 12€
Matosinhos, north of Porto just separated by one street is well known for the fish. This restaurant is one of the places there just shortly after the last beach and before the harbour. It used to be just this one room, it has 2 now. Fish is always very fresh and comes grilled or boiled and again with potatoes and vegetables or salad. Friendly service in a relaxed atmosphere.
